About

The short version: a free, structured curriculum for becoming a software engineer — maintained by one person, open from day one.

Who runs this

The New Engineer is an independent project built and maintained by one engineer — matha31 on GitHub. There is no company behind it, no investors, no sales team: the site has no billing at all. It exists because the road from first code to shipping AI-native products deserves a map that isn't selling you anything.

Where the curriculum comes from

A curated, MIT-licensed open curriculum — hundreds of hands-on lessons organized as twenty phases across four levels — loaded into the site in full, with progress tracking, quizzes and search layered on top. Nothing is locked and nothing expires: every lesson is readable without an account.

Why you can trust it

  • Free forever — no billing, no plan tiers, ever. There is nothing to sell you, so there is no reason to pad the material.
  • Every lesson is one idea with working code. No filler, no 40-minute videos to sit through — each lesson stands on its own page.
  • Proof over completion badges. Quizzes before and after each lesson check what you actually learned, and every phase ends with an artifact: working code you can show a hiring manager.
  • Open by design. The curriculum carries an MIT license, and reading it never requires an account — progress tracking and quizzes are the only parts that need one.

Spot something wrong?

A curriculum this size is never finished. If a lesson is wrong, unclear, or out of date, say so — contact the maintainer.
